Medicare Plans Explained

Understanding Your Medicare Options

Medicare can feel overwhelming, but it doesn't have to be. Lori breaks down every option in plain language so you can choose with confidence.

Part C

Medicare Advantage Plans

An all-in-one alternative to Original Medicare, offered by private insurance companies and approved by Medicare.

Medicare Advantage (Part C) bundles your hospital (Part A), medical (Part B), and usually prescription drug (Part D) coverage into a single plan. Many plans include extra benefits like dental, vision, hearing, and fitness programs — often at low or $0 monthly premiums.

Best for

Seniors who want bundled coverage, extra benefits, and predictable costs.

Key Features

  • Combines Parts A, B, and often D in one plan
  • May include dental, vision, and hearing
  • Often $0 or low monthly premium
  • Network of doctors and hospitals applies
  • Annual enrollment period each fall
Medigap

Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Extra coverage that works alongside Original Medicare to help pay costs like copays, coinsurance, and deductibles.

Medicare Supplement plans - also called Medigap - fill the gaps left by Original Medicare. They are sold by private insurers and help cover out-of-pocket costs so you have more predictable healthcare expenses. You keep your Original Medicare and see any doctor who accepts Medicare.

Best for

People who want freedom to see any provider that accepts Medicare.

Key Features

  • Works alongside Original Medicare (Parts A & B) to help cover co-insurance expenses.
  • See any doctor who accepts Medicare - no networks
  • Separate Part D plan needed for prescriptions
Part D

Medicare Part D — Prescription Drug Coverage

Standalone prescription drug coverage that works with Original Medicare or a Medicare Supplement plan.

Medicare Part D helps cover the cost of prescription medications. Plans are offered by private insurance companies and vary in which drugs they cover (formulary) and what you pay. Choosing the right Part D plan based on your specific medications can save you hundreds of dollars a year.

Best for

Anyone on Original Medicare or a Medigap plan who needs prescription drug coverage.

Key Features

  • Covers brand-name and generic prescription drugs
  • Plans vary by formulary (drug list) and cost
  • Monthly premium plus copays or coinsurance
  • Late enrollment penalty if you delay without coverage
